Principal Investigator / Doctoral Supervisor

Research Group Leader of Stem Cells and Mechanobiology

Email:py.wang@ojlab.ac.cn

Personal Profile

Dr Peng-Yuan Wang, Distinguished Principal Investigator of Oujiang Laboratory. He has received several prestigious awards, including the ARC DECRA Fellowship, the VESKI Fellowship, the China Overseas High-level Talents, and the Zhejiang Overseas High-level Talents. He was a PI at Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology (SIAT), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and the Director of Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Biomimetic Materials and Cellular Immune Regulation. He has received many awards, such as Vice-Chancellor's Award of Swinburne University, and the representative of China-Australia young scientists.

Dr Wang’s group has developed a variety of bioengineering tools and methods to study the regulation of unique biomechanotransduction signaling. Mammalian cells attach to the extracellular matrix (ECM), where the surfaces control cell adhesion, cytoskeleton, and nucleus. Then, these changes regulate cell behavior, transcriptome profile, and epigenetic state. The research has important significance and potential application in organ development and materiobiology, and the outcomes play a guiding role in designing new biomaterials and cell therapy approaches.

Dr Wang’s group has published more than 100 SCI papers, with over 70 being the first/corresponding authors, including Adv Funct Mater (2), ACS Nano (2), Small (3), Mol Ther (2), ACS Appl Mater Inter (8), Acta Biomater (5), etc. He holds 8 granted invention patents.

Research Direction

(1) Stem Cells and Materials Biology

Our team utilizes extracellular matrix materials to stimulate the directed differentiation or cellular reprogramming of stem cells. Through the biomechanical signaling induced by material surfaces, we regulate cell adhesion, growth, transcriptome profiles, and epigenetic states. This not only holds significant potential applications in biomedical engineering but also provides guidance in the design of biomaterials.

(2) Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering

Our team utilizes methods such as etching, template imprinting, and hydrogels to fabricate various bioengineering materials. We study the behavior patterns of cell growth in 2D and 3D, aiming to uncover the interaction mechanisms between cells and materials, as well as cell-to-cell interactions. Ultimately, we seek to optimize the microenvironment for cell phenotype and tissue development conditions.

Over the past decade, our team has been dedicated to the field of materials biology, accumulating rich achievements and experience in areas such as bioengineering materials, directed differentiation of stem cells, and cell reprogramming. To date, we have published over 80 academic papers in renowned international journals, including sub-journals of Nature and Cell. Since the establishment of the team upon Dr. Wang Pengyuan's return to China in 2018, we have successfully secured funding for 2 national key R&D programs, 1 national natural science fundation (NSFC) project, 2 international cooperation projects with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1 provincial-level international cooperation project, and 1 key laboratory project at the municipal level, totaling over 20 million RMB in approved funding.

One notable achievement of the team is the development of the "Drug Screening Technology based on Circulating Tumor Cell Organoids," which received the Second Prize in the Biological category of the 2020 China Shenzhen Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition (Shenzhen Innovation Competition), earning a certificate from the Shenzhen Municipal Science and Technology Innovation Commission. The following year, the team once again secured the Second Prize in the Growing Group of the Shenzhen Innovation Competition, and was recommended to participate in the China Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition (National Competition), achieving the sixth place nationally and receiving unanimous recognition from experts in the field.

Looking ahead, the team will continue to delve into the fundamental research and industrial applications of bioengineering materials in the field of stem cells. Our focus is on addressing key scientific and technological challenges in the clinical application of bio materials and cell therapy, unraveling underlying scientific questions, and striving to produce high-quality cells. Additionally, we aim to develop bioengineering materials that are irreplaceable, pioneering the future of biomaterials and cell technology.
