Episodic memory comprises experiences containing spatial-temporal information (where, when and what) that can be consciously recalled. Episodic memory is stored in (or via) entorhinal-hippocampal circuit, the navigation system in mammalian brain (place cells and grid cells). Episodic memory decline is the first and most prominent symptom of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the most prevalent neurodegenerative diseases. Our lab studies episodic memory encoding, storage and retrieval using viral tools that make memory-encoding neurons (engram neuron) visible in the hippocampus. We also study the mechanism of episodic memory decline in AD and develop nucleic acid-based novel interventive approaches for neurodegenerative diseases including AD and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
