On April 7, 2025, Jianzhong Su's team at Oujiang Laboratory, together with Weihua Chen's team at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), published a research paper in Nature Microbiology entitled "Integrating microbial GWAS and single cell transcriptomics reveals associations between host cell populations and the gut microbiome" in Nature Microbiology. The study developed an innovative computational framework, scBPS (Single Cell Bacteriophage Polygenic Scoring), which for the first time systematically mapped the interactions between gut flora and host cell populations and revealed the molecular mechanism by which the key bacterium, Collinsella, affects host health through the regulation of cholesterol metabolism in central venous hepatocytes, providing a new perspective for the study of host-microbe interactions.
This study fills a gap in the field of host genetics-colony-cell type analysis, and the establishment of the scBPS algorithm provides an effective tool for studying the cellular specificity of microbial-host interactions in disease phenotypes, which will help to accurately analyze the causal network of dysbiosis in diseases and promote the development of personalized therapies.
