On December 28, ZHANG Wenjie, the Acting Mayor of Wenzhou Municipal Government, visited Oujiang Lab, stressing that the Lab should anchor the goal of “becoming top in China and  first-class in the world”, to build the Lab into an internationally-influential platform on regenerative medicine, vision and brain health, and make greater contributions to Wenzhou’s innovation-driven development.

Since its inauguration in May 2021, Oujiang Lab has been focusing on the precise medicine of regenerative medicine, vision and brain health with an overall principle of “focusing on cutting-edge research to directly answer the market demands so as to empower the industry”. It has devoted itself to making breakthroughs in stranglehold areas concerning life and health technologies and key theoretical bottlenecks. Currently, the lab has gathered over 600 high-level talents, and its first research building, Qihang Building has been put into use.

ZHANG and the delegation visited the Biomedical Big Data Intelligent Computing Center, the Core Facilities and PI Labs, learning in detail about the platform construction to find out difficulties encountered in operation. After hearing the report on the Lab construction, he highly recognized its practices and achievements in talent recruitment, platform construction, and mechanism innovation.

ZHANG pointed out, Oujiang Lab, as the pioneer of Zhejiang’s high-level innovation platform, should anchor its goals, seek a path with its own features, and deliver more landmark results so as to make it a “Wenzhou Brand” or “Wenzhou Trademark” among provincial, and even national labs.

He emphasized that : (1) more efforts in bringing in talents. People are the most important resource. The Lab should be innovative in staff management, coordinate the overall resources in a better way so as to ensure a fair environment for talents with sound environment, decent pay and promising future;

(2) more efforts in developing advanced institutional mechanism. Oujiang Lab needs to keep improving the daily management, performance evaluation, result commercialization, and investment. Evaluations should be implemented with equal consideration to short-term revenue and long-term yields, to process and results, to performance and potential, to R&D contribution and social benefits. A system to assess these indicators, as well as a dynamic monitoring system should be set up, with clear guidance and equal emphasis on incentives and constraints;

and (3) more efforts in scaling the heights of profession. Oujiang Lab needs to serve the national strategy, empower local development, and lead the industry’s frontier. The Lab should focus on its core, while at the same time,  boost its output, and construct a full-chain development pattern from R&D, application, to industrialization. The Wenzhou municipal government will continue to support the Lab’s development as always, aiming to build it into an provincial even national model in the field of life and health.
